Upper School - Humanities
Upper School Humanities combines the study of History, English, Philosophy, Art History and Literature into one three year, integrated course. Classes meet nine times each week in lectures, small-group discussions, and writing conferences with three to four students.
This course begins a chronological study of World History that will last through 11th grade by examining five elements of society - political, economic, social, religious, artistic / intellectual.
9th Grade
10th Grade
- World History - The History of Civilization: 1700 - 1900.
This course includes the Enlightenment, Colonialism, French and American Revolutions, U.S. Constitution, Industrial Revolution, Imperialism, Darwin, Marx, and Freud.
- Debates on Constitutional issues
11th Grade
- World History - The History of Civilization: 1900 - Present.
This course is a comprehensive study of events of the 20th century: World War I, the Harlem Renaissance, the Depression, Fascism, the Holocaust, World War II, the Cold War, Post Colonialism, and Liberation movements.
12th Grade
- Political campaigns - Required participation in a political campaign through the November elections
- Two year-long elective seminars - Global Issues, Law and Society, Current Events, Latin American Studies, Comparative Literature, Philosophy, Senior Writing, and Senior Project.
