Athletics develop physical competence and character and are integral to living a healthy and balanced life. Athletes at Northwest experience the powerful and positive aspects of playing sports - achieving team and individual goals through dedication; forging close bonds through elevating as a team to shared goals; developing character through choosing each day to be a competitor.
31 tournament, league, state, and national championship trophies are a source of school pride and attest to our athletic successes. Regardless of win/loss record, our guiding principles are to compete all-out and focus on elevating performance to the highest level. Our teams reflect the international dimension of the school, benefiting from the presence of athletes from many countries. Middle School sports teams are part of our PE program so teams practice during the regular school day rather than after school. Our schedule works well for the elite athlete who needs time for other teams outside the regular school day. It works equally well for beginners, who can try a new sport within the safe environment of school and need not choose between athletics and another after-school interest. Students benefit from a schedule that allows several experienced high school coaches to coach at the Middle School level. "Watch a kid lay out horizontally from an all-out sprint and come up, covered in mud, disc in hand, and you're looking at one happy athlete. No matter what the age or the sport, my job at The Northwest School is to help that kid develop the skills and find the fire to be that kind of player."
