Celebrating the Arts

The extended community of Northwest gathered in the Center for Spiritual Living to celebrate the 38th annual ArtsFest Gala on March 7, 2018. Over 300 students participated in the gala, which honors music, dance, visual arts, and theatre. Humanities teacher Scott Davis hosted the event.

One of the most moving acts of the night was titled "Rise Up," performed by the Upper School Performing Dance Ensemble, members of Spoken Word, and the A Cappella Choir, The emotional poem dealt with police brutality and the killings of people of color, and called for unity, strength, and support.

Many of the 14 acts of the night featured collaborations across classes or grade levels. The Social Dance class danced to "Mambo" from West Side Story, with music provided by the Upper School Orchestra, Combined Orchestra, and Band. The Upper School Orchestra and Creative Dance performed together in "Themes from Pirates of the Caribbean," which featured pirate costumes worn by the orchestra players.

One of the highlights of the event was the closing act by the Middle School Hip Hop and the Upper School Performing Dance Ensemble (PDE). Titled "The Switch," the dance was choreographed by Hip Hop and PDE students working together.
