The Global Learning Philosophy of The Northwest School
"We graduate students with historical, scientific, artistic and global perspective, enabling them to think and act with integrity, believing they have a positive impact on the world."
—From the Mission Statement of The Northwest School
The education of global citizens is a founding principle of The Northwest School, and in the 21st century is an educational imperative. We address the education of global citizens in many areas of the school, most clearly in the following ways:
- Student body composition, roughly 16% of whom are international students who come from more than 12 countries each year. Students have come from Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, the Middle East, Mexico, and Canada.
- Curriculum, which integrates significant global studies throughout each grade level.
- Global Partner Network, in Spain (est. 1989), Japan (est. 1990), El Salvador (est. 1999), France (est. 2000), China (est. 2010), and Taiwan (est. 2010), with forthcoming partnerships expected soon with Ethiopia and Scotland. This network is centered around class trips and exchanges, and extends into shared online learning experiences, which enrich the curricular experiences of our students. Periodically, opportunities arise for additional trips to such countries as Cambodia, Cuba, and Korea.
These partnerships, our dynamic curriculum, and our international student population enrich The Northwest School's vibrant and culturally diverse community, enabling our college preparatory education to equip each student not only for college but also for a productive and rewarding future in our interconnected world.
Our long-term educational partnerships enhance the curricular experiences of our students through class trips, cultural immersion, and shared online learning experiences. At Northwest, we encourage a global perspective every day.
