Winter Parent Education Forum with Julie Metzger RN, MSN and Rob Lehman, MD
Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Guest Speaker: Julie Metzger RN, MSN and Rob Lehman, MD
Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll—and Other Things—That Go Bump in the Night
As parents, it can be difficult to know how to communicate with our children about sex, sexuality and other high-risk behaviors. What information do our kids need to make smart decisions and form healthy relationships? What are the right questions to ask? How can we assess the risk and create a partnership of trust and respect? Julie Metzger and Rob Lehman, co-founders of Great Conversations, will share their insights on what teens are thinking, including gleanings from their work with our NWS 10th graders in the Fall 2011 sessions. They will discuss parental strategies that can help set the stage for open communication on critically important topics.
Julie Metzger, RN, MN is pediatric nurse, writer and educator. She is a well-respected and popular speaker, nurse consultant at Seattle Children’s Hospital and parent of three adolescent children. Julie is a co-founder of Great Conversations, a program focused on health education for families.

Fall Parent Education Forum with Alan Braun
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Guest Speaker: Alan Braun, NWS Assistant Head of School
At Home in the World: Global Perspectives and The Northwest School Experience
Join Alan Braun, Assistant Head of School, for an evening of information, exploration, and discussion about what "global perspective" means at The Northwest School. By listening to the voices of international students and tapping into his own experiences living and teaching abroad, Alan will present insights and a framework for understanding The Northwest School's goal of "cultural competence." Alan will explore the idea that "cultural competence" is gained through experience and reflection, leading to the awareness and humility that allows one to move between cultures with agility.
Alan Braun was raised in Ghana, Africa interspersed with a year spent here and there in various places in the U.S. He is what sociologists term a “third culture kid”—children of diplomats, missionaries, career military officers, etc.—who have spent a significant portion of their formative years in cultures other than their parents’ native culture. Alan’s journey gives him a unique view on the concept of “culture”. We are fortunate to have Alan Braun, our Assistant Head of School, share his perspective and help shape our students’ high school experience at the NWS.
