Finnish education has been in the news recently, as the system has produced students who, according to PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment), outperformed those of all other OECD (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development) countries.
McKinsey Consulting was employed to analyze the Finnish system. Their finding is that GREAT TEACHERS are
at the heart of great education. The Northwest School was founded on this very premise. The consultants' finding echoes almost to a word, our philosophy which was written 30 years prior to it.
McKinsey's finding:
The quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers.
The Northwest School's statement:
Excellence in education is determined by the quality of the faculty.
There are many qualities which define our teachers. Key among them is their interest in self-development, ongoing learning and interest in the world beyond the classroom.
A small sampling of some of the experiences our faculty have recently had include:
- Rod Kov (Math) taught in Cambodia
- Lin Lucas (Cartooning / Diversity Coordinator) performed with a dance troupe in Japan
- Scott Davis (Humanities) is teaching in prisons
- Glen Sterr (Upper School Director) sailed a small boat up to Alaska
- Kathryn Cunningham (Math / Science) traveled to Cambodia
- Jeff Blair (Humanities) mentored South African students in a filmmaking endeavor
- Laura Wright (Visual Art / Textiles) learned about native textiles and making art from recycled materials in Ghana
Great Teachers = Inspired Students.
