Welcome to the 2008-09 school year, the 29th year of the school!

What a summer of spectacle and races we have had, both Olympian and political. And we are headed into a fall charged with political energy.

The win/lose paradigm is all around us, in medal counts and seats won or lost. The American presidency is also won through a race in which the candidates, like players, need strategy, stamina, practice, good coaching, determination, talent and maybe even a touch of luck.

It is our job as educators to ensure that our students understand what this race is about, that it is about different interpretations of our founding principles. It is equally important that "courtesy and common sense" guide the kind of conversation and differences we may have about this race.

Whether it's the seniors fulfilling their 21 hours of service on a campaign of their choice, or the 10th graders debating issues in terms of the Bill of Rights, 8th graders discussing current events, or lunchroom conversations, we want our children to appreciate and respect the democratic system we have inherited and each other's possible differences within it.

What a time to be living in our democracy.
