College Counseling

Every Northwest School student is assigned a college counselor in the 11th grade. College counselors teach research and decision-making skills and challenge students to take ownership of the process. At the end of the process, our goal is not only a positive college outcome, but also that each student has discovered and learned to articulate his or her skills, interests, and talents.

Resources & Services

In addition to writing the school letters of recommendation for students’ college applications, Northwest’s College Counseling Office offers a variety of resources and services to students and families, including:

  • Individual Meetings
  • Résumé and Essay Support
  • Workshops
  • Application Work Parties
  • Standardized Test Prep Resources
  • College & Scholarship Research Library

For more information on these offerings, view our College Counseling Timeline.

College Representative Visits

Representatives from more than 100 colleges and universities meet with students at The Northwest School each year. College visits are posted in SCOIR and on the bulletin board outside of the college office.

Summer, Gap Years, & Special Programs

We encourage all students to consider meaningful summer plans and to take advantage of work, volunteer, and travel experiences. In partnership with students' academic advisors, the college counselors are available to support students who wish to pursue a part time job, volunteer opportunity, or summer or gap year study abroad experience. The College Counseling Office maintains a list of opportunities, including low- and no-cost options.

SCOIR is your home base for organizing your college search with The Northwest School. This web-based program allows you to research colleges and universities. The College Counseling team will also be using SCOIR to manage college visits and maintain important information about students’ college journeys. Students and parents are given individual logins at the beginning of 11th grade. Current 11th and 12th grade families can access SCOIR by clicking here
