Head of School Welcome

On Behalf of our Community, Welcome to Northwest

Ray Wilson

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to a school community that I am proud to lead and honored to be a part of every day. Whether you are a prospective family, a current student or parent, a cherished alum, or a valued supporter, I hope you feel the warmth, energy, and sense of purpose that define the Northwest School.

As we celebrate our 45th anniversary this year—marking our founding in 1980—we do so with deep gratitude for all those who have helped shape this remarkable place. For more than four decades, Northwest has been a home for bold ideas, enduring friendships, and transformative learning. That legacy lives on in the energy and wisdom of our faculty, the strength of our community, and the incredible promise we see in each of our students.

What makes our school truly special is not only what we teach, but how we live and learn together. In classrooms filled with creative thinking, in studios and labs alive with exploration, and in our residence halls that feel like home, students are seen, supported, and encouraged to stretch beyond what they thought possible. Our boarding program creates a close-knit community where learning extends well beyond the school day. And our location—in the heart of a dynamic city—connects students with real-world experiences and opportunities that deepen their understanding of themselves and the world around them.

The Northwest School is a place where the arts are celebrated, where STEM innovation flourishes, and where diversity of thought and background enriches everything we do. We believe that education should spark curiosity, cultivate compassion, and prepare students not only for college, but for meaningful lives. That belief drives us, inspires us, and connects us to one another.

Thank you for being a part of our story—whether you're just beginning to learn about us or have been with us for generations. We’re glad you’re here, and we look forward to all the ways you’ll continue to shape and be shaped by this vibrant school.

Warm regards,

Raymond Wilson, M.Ed.

    Faculty

We always strive to foster collaboration, solicit feedback and welcome new ideas from our knowledgeable and experienced faculty. Some of the ways I encourage engagement with faculty is through—

    • Listening sessions
    • New employee welcomes
    • DIversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Wednesday mornings
    • Encouraging faculty members to join me for lunch or coffee

Engagement with Local Leaders and Community Groups

Strong partnerships with community groups and local leaders creates a strong network of support and collaboration. These partnerships can provide valuable resources, expertise, and opportunities that enhance the educational experience for our students and help align the school's goals with broader community needs.

The Northwest School is actively involved with —

    • The Seattle chapter of the People of Color in Independent Schools (POCIS) organization
    • The leadership at local independent and public middle and high schools
    • The co-design and hosting of events with local business leaders.
    • The North West Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS).
Students who feel a sense of belonging at school are typically more energized, more likely to spend time on-task and return to activities, and more likely to choose to be in the school environment.
