Husayn also plays and has coached competitive ultimate. In his application, Husayn tells us: “As an elite ultimate athlete I pride myself on playing (and coaching) a sport in which social justice, relative to other sports, is a high priority.
Husayn's commitment to self-officiation fosters an environment of empowerment and respectful conflict resolution, and its emphasis on spirit of the game celebrates respect, open-mindedness, and genuine relationship-building between competitors. Many of the values that serve as pillars for the sport are values that are also essential for promoting social justice more broadly. More specifically, I also volunteer with AGE UP (All Girl Everything), a non-profit that promotes empowerment of young women of color through ultimate in Seattle's Southend. I try to bring some of the values and points of emphasis from that organization into the classroom including but not limited to: an awareness of how privilege, class, race, and gender impact ultimate and the world more broadly.”
