Environmental Sustainability
Environmental Sustainability
We care for the environment by learning and implementing sustainability practices to protect our planet and the future.
Environmental sustainability is at the heart of The Northwest School’s mission, shaping our curriculum, community, and operations through social responsibility.
Biodiversity
Seventh graders engage in hands-on learning about how to increase biodiversity through landscaping - our partner, Britescapes, collaborates on teaching. Students map and measure the site, propagate native plants indoors, and then transplant them outdoors.

Service Learning: Thinking Locally, Acting Globally
Students spend a year learning about social and environmental factors that affect critical resources - then they partner with community organizations to take meaningful action. This cultivates social responsibility at the individual, communal, and global levels.
Carbon Neutrality Commitment
Student advocacy inspires The Northwest School to pursue carbon neutrality.
We’re reducing our carbon footprint by implementing energy-efficient upgrades and rethinking operational practices.
Our strategy includes:
- Making sustainable commitments based on the latest science.
- Using offsets where it’s not possible to reduce emissions.
- Tracking progress through detailed reporting.
- Reducing emissions through innovative solutions.
This impacts our campus in many ways, from facilities operation to community engagement.
Upper School Wins 2026 Food Waste Challenge
Our student-led Climate Action Team ran a Food Waste Challenge during Earth Month to drive awareness around food wastage and its negative environmental impact. And the results were pretty inspiring!
Connections Week 2026 Recap
Connections Week 2026 (April 21-24) was an interdisciplinary and immersive opportunity for students to get out in the field and put their learning to work! And our students had a range of excellent experiences, both on and off campus.
NWS Co-Founder Spotlight: Mark Terry
As Northwest celebrates a 45-year legacy, Co-Founder Mary Terry reminisces about the people and programs that shaped this vibrant and meaningful place of learning.

Socially Responsible Investments
100% of The Northwest School’s endowment is invested according to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria to promote sustainability goals and support our students’ futures.
Sustainable Facilities
Sustainability drives how we design, operate, and manage our facilities.
In 2019, we received the Green Ribbon School Award. In 2022, we committed to achieving carbon neutrality—a goal supported by both sustainably managing our building systems and a community-wide culture of environmental stewardship.
We are strategically updating our building systems to increase sustainability and closely manage the systems to insure they’re operating most efficiently. Meanwhile, school-wide campaigns encourage reducing material consumption, adopting sustainable purchasing practices, and fostering a collective commitment to sustainability in our everyday actions. Some examples include:
- High-efficiency boilers and heat pumps
- LED lighting with sensors
- Recycled paper products
- Reusable decorations for events
